My Tenderhearted

There's been several times this past year where both boys will randomly bring up Carrie and have a question or two. We've always welcomed their questions and been totally honest with them. I know Cole understands, but there have been several times I wonder if I've only confused Brad more. A small part of me worried that Brad would never remember, but God has proven me wrong.

If anything, Brad remembers her ALL the time. When we drive past the local cemetery, he will tell everyone in the car that his sister is there (she isn't). When we say prayers at night and mention who we are thankful for, he always says "don't forget Carrie in Heaven". As he was walking outside the other day he said "I love you mom, I love you Mickey, I love you Merlin, I love you baby Carrie".

Sometimes I don't know what to do with all his sweet moments.

Today I was working up at the school helping his teacher. They were sitting in circle time and each person had to tell the class what they are thankful for. Lots of kids were thankful for their moms, thankful for school, thankful for their toys. I just happened to walk in when it was Brad's turn. He announced to the class he is thankful for his baby sister Carrie who died.

He's my tenderheart. And he's right. I'm thankful for her too - despite all the pain and heartache, we got to be her family. Thank you God.

Angler

My little Colby has become quite the fisherman. In fact, almost a little obsessed about it. He asks DAILY - several times a day - if he can go fishing. He carries around a tackle box with him and thinks I should always have his poles in the back of the van. Cole's new favorite show is River Monsters and knows all the different kinds of fish to catch around here.

Yesterday he told me that he only wants to play in the JUNIOR World Cup so he can be a professional fisherman too. I kissed his head and said he can be anything he wants to be. Later Cole told me he really wants to do both because if he's a fisherman he can take Brad with him.

Family Photo Session

I bought a coupon online last month for a family photo session. We arranged to meet the other night at the park for a quick shoot. The photographer was a cute, quite little girl. She held three jobs and seemed pretty modest. Enter, my boys.

We are in the park and they are running around like monkeys. They are climbing trees and she's really having to chase them to get photos. Brad found a big stick (also known as a tree branch) and was whacking everything in sight. Including a few near misses to her head.

Then she did the worse thing you can do around my children: She let her fear be known. Aunt Kimi will tell you all about that horrible mistake. Sweet photographer said "I hate snakes. If I see a snake, I'll be running the other way FAST!" NO WOMAN!!! You just fed my boys dynamite! As we are all gathered for a family shot, Cole screams out "SNAKE!" and points to her feet to scare her. Lovely.

Continuing our walk around the park she spots a nice rock ledge for the boys to sit for some more pictures. We prop them up there and Cole looks down. I guess someone wrote something on the rock. Then I hear.....

"F. U. C. K. ......... F*ck? F*ck? Am I saying that right? I'm reading it right here. It says f*ck. What's f*ck?"

Then Brad starts piping in - jumping up and down on the rock ledge repeating his newly learned word. We're wonderful parents. Damn Teachers is what I say. Teaching him to READ!

Soon sweet Jessica decided she had enough pictures and told us she will get back with us in a couple of weeks. I'm wondering if we'll ever see her again. Who knows?? Just in case I had Keith take a few more while we were all dressed up. I love those little monsters with all my heart. They keep me laughing. They keep me crazy. They keep my heart full.

Family pictures 2011 complete!

Fire! Fire!

Yesterday Cole had the firemen come to his class to talk about Fire Safety. They had a "smoke house" trailer they were able to go in to see how smokey a room can quickly become. His homework was to go home and talk to us and make a family plan if there was a fire.

Love it. So we did. Our plan is to GET OUT! I told them anyway, break a window, any door, and we all meet at The Newcomb's house. They are our family meeting spot.

See quick and painless. Homework complete. Good Talk. Until the questions began.....

Brad - But what about our pets?
Me - Good question, you're only job is to GET OUT. If you leave the door open I promise they will all follow you.

Cole - How do I get out with the screens on?
Me - Another good question. If you open the window and kick them, it will come off and then you GET OUT!

Brad - But what about my colors?
Me - Leave the colors, your only job is to GET OUT.

Brad - Will the firemen go back in and get my colors?
Me - The firemen will show up to put the fire out, just make sure you GET OUT! I can buy new colors. I can't buy a new you. So GET OUT!

Cole - You will buy new colors? I really need some new colors.........

In Brad's typical fashion, he came home and drew an artistic representation of what was going on in his little head.... He called it "Get Low and Go!" Notice we are going to the MTPL. He said that means MEETING PLACE. Spelled it all by himself. I love that knucklehead. And if anyone needs a birthday gift idea for Cole, please send new crayons before we have to head to the MTPL. Pyro ;-)

And so it begins....

Out of the blue, Cole decided to make a sign for his door. I don't like it.

The following day Brad decided to make signs for his door.

It's funny to see their differences sometimes. We also have been doing stuff to their rooms. Brad really wanted a yellow lego room with a cork board. I painted him a cork board, and this is what he did to it. O well, I like his creativity.

We ordered FATHEADS for Cole's soccer room. He wants to be a professional soccer player and move overseas. Humph.

Messi is the best player in the world right now. Cole still likes Christian Ronaldo better because he has dark skin. HA!

Brad is asking me to make a Christmas Tree for his baby owls. Right on brother. I have no idea what he's talking about and it makes me smile.

Weekend of Fun

Keith is leaving this weekend for a cross country. He's suppose to take one every quarter. He's been on one, to Dallas, in the 15 months we've been here. I guess he's due for one more before he gets out.

You read that right - Keith's palace chase paperwork has been approved. He is set to get out by December 1st. Now we are just waiting on a FedEx start date. Yea! Gulp....

So, this weekend it's just me and the boys. They don't know it, but I'm vowing to myself it will be a "yes" weekend. I will have to strike the word no from my vocabulary. Sometimes I feel like all I ever do is say no - but not this weekend. If they bring up camping I will have to find creative ways to get out of that one!!!

AND, I'm off to buy Keith's Anniversary gift. It's kinda for me, but I can't stop thinking about it! 10 years is poultry right?

My Me Space

I am surrounded by great friends and family. You fill my heart over and over again with your thoughtfulness, and love. I hope everybody has someone they can call all day everyday, someone who knows you better than yourself, someone willing to make sympathy cards for your daughter with you, someone to take you out for a laugh, and call you out when you are wrong. I do. I have a solid core of friends that I only pray that I'm equally as good a friend to them. I love you all.

Melissa got me a birthday gift this year. She is always so considerate when it comes to gift giving and has ALWAYS been able to write the perfect stream of words out to express herself.

She knows that tulips are my favorite flowers. Melissa also knows that my house in Idaho had a saying written on my wall.

"Bloom Where You Are Planted"

I stuck by that motto with every Air Force move. God put us there for a reason. He needed us planted and to grow at each location. Many times those locations were NOT our first or even second choice, but we have loved each place we've been assigned. Bloom where you are planted reminded me to spread the fruits of the spirit, to get involved, and to take advantage of each city because our time there was short.

I promise this all ties together!

So she gave me this gift of a beautiful canvas painting:

On the back is a note that reads:

Jennifer, "Bloom where you are planted" - one of your favorite quotes. Tulips - your favorite flower.

I chose this gift for you to bring you a sense of renewed strength each time you see it. I pray that you will once again be able to view springtime with a full and peaceful heart.

Your sweet Carrie will be with you forever in your heart and soul... and in Heaven, you will one day hold her hand.

I love you, my dear friend ~ Sister of my heart, Melissa K

So I've created a Me Place in my bathroom. To see and read every morning. It is a reminder to continue growing, to not just survive, but to thrive. I cherish it. And I love my dear friend.

Cool Kid

All the cool kids INSIST on argyle socks with shorts and tennis shoes. I dig his style. Please God don't let anyone make him conform to the norm!

The Gingerbread Man

Brad's story this week is the gingerbread man. They made hats today and I think went on a little scavenger hunt for a gingerbread man. He wore it all day walking around the school looking for Mr. Gingerbread Man. Here is Brad's hat:

I think they had to decorate it. One would think with items having to do with the story...... or maybe not???

And this:

Get your mind out of the gutter. It's CLEARLY a pair of scissors. My baby wore that on his head. All.Day.Long.

Say WHAT?!?!

I heard a song on the radio today. Call it funny, or a joke, but I will do everything in my power to prevent my boys from having this attitude:

All alone the other I get to drinking and thinking about the woman of this old world,
Well I known quite a few but between me and you I ain't never met the perfect girl,
They either ain't that fun or way too young or they ain't got a lick of sense
Well I dunno if she exist but I'm making up a list that I'm checking 'em all against

(Chorus)
She gotta be five foot eleven
She smells like heaven
She was born in eighty six or maybe eighty seven
She got full intention of getting her P.H.D.
She got some big ol' boobies
A countrified booty
She's a certified bonified cold blooded cutie
If anybody knows where the perfect girl might be
Won't you tell her bout me

Well I don't mean to sound picky but relationships are tricky and I'm looking for a perfect fit,
I want a smoking hot honey with a whole lot of money who's favorite thing is sharing it,
Well you can't really miss her hell she may be your sister but whoever she might be,
You'd be a real life saver if you do me one favor and put in a good word for me

(Chorus)
She gotta be five foot eleven
She smells like heaven
She measures thirty six twenty four thirty seven
She got full intention of financially supporting me
She got some big ol' boobies
A countrified booty
And she don't get mad if I watch dirty movies
If anybody knows where the perfect girl might be
Won't you tell her bout me

You can tell her that I'm all alone and to call me if she would
You can tell her frickin anything as long as it's all good

(Chorus)
Well She gotta be five foot eleven
She smells like heaven
Let's me do what I want to twenty four seven
She got full intention of letting me be me
And you know she got some real big boobies
A countrified booty
And she thinks cleaning house is a womans duty
If anybody knows where the perfect girl might be
Won't you tell her bout me

[Thanks to J.T. Schofield for lyrics]

Makes me think those "horrible songs" we grew up listening to aren't really that bad now! Remind me that the boys aren't allowed to listen to new Country music either. We will be parking the dial on XM Prime country. Thank you very much!

Itchy Face

How in the world do we get one day of "cool" weather and my allergies are going crazy?? It really makes scrubbing the bathrooms hard to do - maybe I should put off all housework till my nose stops running. Good idea. Then again, I would be really embarrassed if ANYONE were to use the boy's bathroom between now and then. How do they gross it up so quickly?

Today I am very thankful that I have the chance to eat lunch with my kids at school. Brad talks about EVERYTHING and Cole tells me more about his day over lunch then I get out of him all night.

Tonight is Cole's first Cub Scouts meeting. I have to say I'm not very excited about adding another "thing" on our schedules, but he is looking forward to it. He needs a good balance between soccer and school. Cole got to go dove hunting with Keith last week. He's a total outdoorsman at heart. He gets that from his Dad, not me! Lord, please don't make me go camping!

Clothes for Carrie

This isn't how I expected things to turn out. You know today marks the day that you should have been born. We weren't going to find out the sex so I would have made your Daddy go buy something wonderful, soft, and pink to bring you home in...

I never get to shop in the girls section, so the cuteness overload might take over! We are pretty much shorts and tshirts around here. Who knew there are so many options when it comes to dressing a baby girl?! Once it starts to cool down, we would have to wake up and get the boys ready for school. I would have to dress you in something fallish...

Pretty soon the holidays would roll around and I would immediately put this atop your head every time we walked out the door.

There's not many opportunities to wear feathers in your life, so you should take advantage of it while you are young. You would grow up to hate me for putting the large feather head-eating things on for all your pictures. But it was SOOOO cute at the time.

I would also make you wear this sleeper. I know, it's still 104* in Texas, but you're little and can't control your body heat yet....

Most definitely followed by these:

Your GG already bought you some things as well....

While it's still cool out, we would have to dress like a giraffe. Only because your Aunt Kimi likes giraffes.

And then I would call you my sweet chickie all day in this

When it starts to warm up, I think you should learn to crawl in something like this:

Or this, because it's totally practical:

In the summer I would take you and your bothers for ice cream wearing this

And on your first birthday, I would have baked you a cake to smash while your Daddy took pictures wearing your 1st Birthday outfit.

But, we only had you here for a short time. All of our dreams and plans for you will live in our hearts until we hold you again. So instead of welcoming you to the world today, I will take these clothes and drop them off at the Pregnancy Help Center in your name. There are mommies with little girls who need our help. When they complete their training class, they will get a gift basket full of useful things (including these ridiculous, impractical, over priced, yet totally adorable, what every princess should wear outfits) Thank you Carrie.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Do you think the world became a more dangerous place on September 11, 2001 or are we just more aware of the danger? How has your own life changed as a result of that day?

I think we are just more aware of the danger. The attacks on 9-11 took years to plan. The danger loomed far before that heartbreaking day. I was a flight attendant when 9-11 occurred. It absolutely changed the way we did our job. Since that day we have been at war. Being a military spouse, the thought never leaves your mind. If our loved one isn't over there, our friend's loved one is, or friends of friends... Someone is in constant worry that their child/spouse/parent is in danger. Others are living a life because their loved one didn't make it home. Never leaves your mind....

2. Did you think your parents were too strict when you were growing up? How about in hindsight?

Yes, I felt they were too strict AT THE TIME. I wanted to be able to do more things and have more freedoms. Looking back, they weren't so bad. I survived and didn't get into near as much trouble as I could have.

3. Share one random but candid fact about yourself.

I find it creepy that Cavendar's Boot City doesn't have windows. I can't go in and shop at a place that doesn't have windows. Nevermind the fact that I don't wear western wear. I don't get it (unless it's at Market Hall in Dallas were everything is at buyers cost.... some things deserve exceptions!)

4. Would your nearest and dearest describe you as simple or far too complicated?

I would guess simple. I think I'm a simple kind of gal.... but then again I also think I'm easy breezy. On a scale of one to ten - one being a beach bum and 10 being militant uptight - I would rank myself as a 3. Family and friends disagree! Maybe I'm complicated and don't even realize it. Now I'm finding this question more and more complicated......

5. What is your favorite stadium or carnival food?

Cotton Candy. Hands down, cotton candy. We went to the circus recently and you would FLIP OUT over how expensive the cotton candy was... are you ready..... one bag was $12. I use to make the stuff when I worked at the candy store. I know how much a bag of sugar is - $12 is a flat out crime. I couldn't resist.

6. Tornado, hurricane, earthquake...how many of these natural disasters have you experienced? Which do you think would be the scariest?

I have experienced tornados and an small earthquake. Neither caused much damage so I kind of have a false sense of security around their dangers. I haven't been through a hurricane, but I think you have so much warning to get out and protect yourself..... Hands down, I know how powerful of a force water can be, but unless you are stranded on an island I would say an earthquake would be the scariest.

7. Labor day weekend is approaching so a work related question seems appropriate. Growing up, did your parents assign you regular chores? Were you paid for doing those chores. If you're a parent do you assign chores to your own children? Why or why not?

I had chores growing up. It was more along the lines of keeping our rooms clean, putting up laundry, and doing the dishes. We weren't given a constant allowance, but we were able to do "extra" chores for more money - like organizing the cabinets, or painting the house. I've started a chore chart for the boys. I need to get back on the bandwagon with that, my kids are spoiled rotten!

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Tomorrow is my would-have-been due date. Not sure how random that is because it's been all I can think about.

Cookie Monster

Brad is very creative. His brain is wired to think of things differently and I couldn't love him anymore if I tried. For instance, he peed in a dixie cup last weekend and walked around the house telling the girls it was snake venom. Seriously. I can't keep up with him.

Today he brought this worksheet home in his folder. They are working on colors and numbers. Obviously, today is the color blue.

Blue tracing, blue bird, blue fish. Excellent work Bradley. Let's flip the paper over and finish up the lesson on Blue.

Wait a sec, honey..... I really like the monsters, but what happened to blue. "Mom, they are the cookie monster!" Oh, they are nice, but how come they are green? Why didn't you trace the word blue? I think you were suppose to draw a picture of something blue. Brad replies "They are happy, look at their tails.....

What? Tails, I don't see any tails......

(flip the paper over and look again)

Perfectly aligned, those green blobs are the cookie monster's tails. Naturally.

School In Session

We officially have a second grader and kindergartner. Watch out Fowler Elementary! Cole is doing incredible in his class and his teacher thinks he is the sweetest boy ever. Brad is adapting very very well. His teacher is full of love for him and we are already working together to make this a great year. The first thing he asked me on the first day of school "how come they don't pray?" Bless his sweet heart.

We are trying to get into full swing with routines. Keith is coaching Cole's soccer team. He's playing up two years to U-10. I can hardly watch as the kids are so much .... older than he is! But he's doing great. He's also been able to practice with The Texans down in Dallas. He's been invited to guest play a few of their games and he will be on the rosters for tournaments. Between the two I'm hoping he's challenged and still having fun. I worry about burnout, but the kid eats and breathes soccer.

Brad had his first practice last night. He did the same thing as the last two seasons, but I'm positive he will be ready for Wednesday! Keith said he has the best touch on the team. I just wish he had the confidence he needs. It's odd to have one so doubtful and the other so.... boastful! Those are my boys! Side note: Yesterday he woke up and asked me "mom, can I be a circus guy AND a prairie dog keeper?" Absolutely! Brad keeps me constantly entertained with his creative comments and imagination. I can't wait till he can start writing so I can keep his journals!

Keith is busy working. We are still waiting to hear about the AF paperwork and a FedEx start date. I'm sure it will all work out, but it's just another thing dangling in the distance of unknown!

The move went well. It was WORK and I highly advise taking advantage of every Air Force paid move you can! There's a few things I need to do to make it "home", but it's coming together.

There is so much to do, but I'm off to take advantage of this hot weather, our pool, and a little me time. I miss my boys, but what good will come of it moping inside when it can be done outside on a pool float as well ;-)

That was fast

I started to sit down to write about the boys first day/week of school and then forgot I had a few things to do. Two hours later, I come back to the computer and here lies the open page. Never started.

What happen to all my free time???

For Heather!

I have seriously been lacking in blogging and many other daily activites - like laundry, feeding my children, reading to them, cleaning, and even the occasional shower.

Today this update is brought to you by the weather. It's 109* outside and I'm suppose to be moving. Sorry Charlie. I worked till about 1:30 today and feel like that was a good enough effort by myself!

Speaking of, the other night we were driving home and I thought I saw someone walking through our new house... turns out I was right. Some very sneaky and caring friends broke in and finished moving ALL of our stuff out of the old house!!! We are down to emptying the garage and attic.

Painting is almost complete, and renters move in next week. Lots to organize and clean in the new house. The boys are swimming like little fish and I must admit the pool is so nice to jump into after any amount of work outside!

I have so much to chat about. What will I do with my time when both boys start school???

One of my favorite things...

I LOVE listening to Cole and Brad sing along to the songs on their ipod. Cole can belt some Justin Bieber out.

Thursday, June 16, 2011

He IS my child!!

Cole is so obsessed with soccer. At times I'm a bit jealous of his total adoration for Keith. He's constantly asking Keith to play with him and practice in the back yard. I'm just an observational fan.

We went to a wedding last weekend and danced the night away! The DJ was rockin and it seems we couldn't get Cole off the dance floor!! In fact, Keith took Brad home and Cole and I shut the place down busting out moves and burning holes in our feet!

On Tuesday Cole says to me "Mom, my feet still hurt from dancing" I couldn't love him more!!!!

Excuse me... what?

Today the Dr's office called to tell me about some confusion there's been with a referral. Brad saw the dermotologist yesterday and it was approved for another dr... basically it's just a headache.

As she was getting off the phone, I casually ask "Brad had some allergy testing a couple of weeks ago and I was wondering if the results were in?" She said sure, let me look it up.

long pause.... then she says:

"Looks like milk and wheat."

Say what? I said "are you telling me he IS allergic to milk and wheat?" "Yep" "Ummm, what were the numbers?" She gave them to me so I'm off to google. They don't sound very high at all, but wasn't prepared for milk and wheat, have a good day!

Am I a horrible mother to dread the cross over to GFCF diets?

Plate is FULL!

I have been slacking on my little blog the past few weeks/months. Life as not only slowed down, but I believe my husband kicked it into warp speed.

Big Excitement!!! Keith was offered a job with Fed Ex. He is absolutely thrilled. I think I might be the only person to know how hard he worked and studied for the interview. And I'm sure I don't know the half of it! He EARNED that position and I know he will continue to work just as hard for that company. He really wanted it and he got it! I'm bursting for him!!! So, now we must prepare for the adjustment out of the military and all that entails.

Cole and Brad finished school and all the activities that happen the last weeks of school. My boys will be in the same place next year. A kindergartner and a second grader.

The screen business has started booming. I guess 109* days will help make the phone ring. Good news. Bad news, we're a one man operation with full time commitments. We're juggling the best we can! I also need to start working on a government contract for the base housing. I think we can get it!!!

That's A Little Better might be fully up and running soon. I need to file a DBA and send some out to local stores and to Lubbock. Gulp!!

Keith is on a mission to open an indoor soccer complex in Wichita Falls. I think we found the land, and have someone coming out in July to start up the business plan and city proposals.

Surprise, the house next door in foreclosure came back with an offer we couldn't refuse. So we're buying a new house and moving. Oh, and we also have to find renters in 3 weeks notice. No biggie, right? We drained and cleaned out the pool this weekend. It needs paint and some serious carpet issues. Oh, and a dishwasher and fridge. Lots of landscaping work, and TLC. On it. We should sign the papers at the end of the month.

I honestly have over a million things to do, but absolutely needed a break. Better get back to making dinner meals, getting ready for Dr. appointments and trips to Dallas to get screens, speech, soccer, dogs, cats, frogs... and a snake. Sigh........and miles to go before he sleeps..........

Shameless BRAG!!!

I'm so stinkin excited!!

Cole and Brad just finished up the MSU soccer camp here in town. They went all week. Brad competed in the precamp and had a great time. He got a certificate and a popsicle. Perfect ending to a hot day. We decided to try moving Cole up a year/age bracket. He had a great time.

Today they passed out awards. The top player in each age group received a trophy and then they gave out an MVP Player of the Camp trophy. And the winner is.......... (if you haven't guess already!)

COLE MCDANIEL!!

I'm so proud of him. He has such a love and passion for soccer and for the past year, his numbers of losses FAR outweighs the number of wins. He never voiced an ounce of frustration. I know he just loves playing the game. But my mama's heart could burst knowing he was rewarded with the top award for his efforts!!

AND, if that wasn't great enough - Brad was equally excited for Cole. We got in the car and Brad asked if I had Messi's phone number so we could call and let him know about Cole's award too. My heart loves those boys today!

Not So Happy Mother's Day

I have a great husband and two wonderful boys. I am blessed to be called mom. I am elated I get to be their mom. They spoiled me yesterday with gifts, cards, flowers, hugs and kisses. I love them over and over again for it.

But yesterday was not "happy", not at all. In fact, it was a horrible Mother's Day. It was a stinging reminder that I was no longer pregnant. It was a stomp on the heart that Carrie was dead. It was painful to think about all the things we will miss without her in our lives.

Today, it's been 2 months since she passed away and on Wednesday, it will be two months since I held her tiny little body in my hands. It's a human thing to do, but I don't need to keep record of it. God knows. He knows her, and myself, so much better than I can record. He knows how much she is missed and He knows how many hearts still hurt. Brad said a prayer last week that went something like "Dear God, I love mommy and I miss the baby. Amen"

Sometimes simplicity says it best. Thank you God for my boys. Thank you for the time we had with Carrie. Thank you for healing her. We miss her. Amen.

Things That Make Me Smile

1. Keith - He's been working very hard. The screen business is doing well, and we're still waiting to make our life changing decisions. GULP! It's odd to not know anything about where life will take us in the next 6 months. I take comfort in knowing that we will always have each other whatever life throws our way.

2. Cole - We went to Keith's Soccer Alumni weekend at the Academy. Cole got to play in the kick-around with all the Varsity players and Alums. He thinks he is big stuff. Cole actually played really well. He hasn't stopped talking about his "like 10 goals!" I was telling him that Keith lived in Colorado and went to school there for FOUR years. Cole gasped and said "did he play soccer everyday? I'm going to live here and play for four years too" I think he might believe the AFA to be a strictly soccer school. He's also wanting to sign up for 2 soccer camps this summer. His only wish: he were playing against college kids.

3. Brad - He's still talking about his up and coming Elf party. I know he has specific visions. I just hope I can figure them out and help him have a great time. AND, he has officially created a new hairdo. I call it the Brad. He's cut a chunk out of his hair twice this past year. In the same spot emphasizing the large cow-lick in front. It seems the style is spreading as he cut a chunk out of his brother's hair in the exact same spot. Keep the scissors away and your hair out of reach from that kid.

4. Mickey and Merlin - They have been at the grandparent's house becoming more and more spoiled. If the dog's behavior is any indication as to how Papa and GG influence grandchildren, I'm in trouble. Mickey thinks a cup of food a day is more his style, and Merlin now prefers canned mixed into his hard food, hand fed on the couch taking his leisurely 30 minutes a feeding. I missed them and their stinkyness. Marty did not miss them.

5. Marty - She was LOVING being the only pet around here the past week. She turned even quirkier if that's possible. I walked in yesterday to find her standing in the shower meowing away at nothing. The dogs are back and I haven't seen her since.

6. City of Wichita Falls - I emailed the City Council about a busy intersection by the elementary school. They wrote back saying it will be investigated immediately and other issues would be addressed. I feel victorious even when others are doing the work ;-)

7. XM Radio - Once again I called to cancel my service because my promotional price is over. They refunded my money AND gave me free service though July. This has been going on since 2006. I don't understand how they make money, but I am please with their customer service.

8. Mike Victor - (my minivan) He is clean and vacuumed. I love him clean and vacuumed.

9. Teeth - We are close to getting my teeth fixed. We were quoted almost $8000 to do 10 teeth. One of Keith's AF buddies is trying to see if they can be classified as medical and then the AF would fix them all for free!! ALL of my teeth!! I hate to be doing the happy dance prematurely, but this excites me to no end.

10. Purses - I got a new Coach purse and wallet for Mother's Day. I love new purses. Good choice boys, how did you ever know that's what I wanted (other than the fact I made you drive 2 hours out of the way and forced you to spend a very long time in the store while I browsed) Keith use to let me have "do as I say" days - this was very much like a flashback of the past. Thanks baby!!

Trashtastic

Yesterday we all went to the lake fishing. Cole was looking at the big boats and GG said she was going to retire and live on a big boat like that. Then my ever so concerned child said "But how do they get to Wal-Mart"

At 7, my son thinks Wal-Mart is a life necessity. What have I done??

Shark Countdown....

Yep, Cole's tooth needs a better look. They want him to come in tomorrow and even warned it will probably be pulled.

Poor kid. I told him they numb his gums and he won't feel a thing. Just don't ask me any more questions. We'll cover it tomorrow.

Dentist

I have a dentist appointment today. I love the dentist. I have spent the majority of my adolescence in a dental chair. My parents have spend the majority of their income to various dental offices. I think it's easier than going to the vet, post office, or pediatrician. Lay down and be quiet - I'm all over it. Sometimes I even nap. Sign me up.

Today I don't want to go to the dentist. I wasn't able to get xrays and a full exam last appointment because I was pregnant with Carrie. Today, I can but I wish I couldn't. Which also means I get to explain to strangers WHY I'm there again, and what happened. It never gets easy or comfortable.

I should also ask about my sweet Colby's shark teeth. His permanent teeth are growing in - WAY in - before his baby ones are even that loose. My little T-Rex. I had my first two teeth pulled by the dentist. I think I was 7. My precious second son (I'm stealing him Heather. Him and little Wyatt), Jake Jones, just had his first two teeth pulled for the very same reason.

So, Dentist or bust today. I'll see if I can't schedule Cole's appointment for some other "can't miss" occasion. I'm good like that.

Add It To My List

I had another World's Worst Mother moment yesterday. I had to take Brad to the doctor in the morning. The way this clinic does their open hours "sick time", it is always a 2 hour experience. Super fun. Cole's been having issues chewing his skin around his nails, so I decided to take him with me to get a prescription to help him stop AND take care of Brad all in one trip. I was having a great mommy moment. I was taking care of business and taking names. PRO-DUC-TIVE!

It wasn't until I dropped him off at school - just before the 10am attendance count because I'm THAT good - did I realize what I did. I missed class pictures. His class has already taken their picture and he wasn't there. Absent from the yearbook - forever listed as "not photographed: Colby McDaniel." His FIRST grade year, in a town we might actually stay and he'll grow up with friends.... missing. There's several reasons I'm probably taking this so hard, but I'm really bummed that I did that. I'm sad in my effort to take care of too many things at once, I totally forgot his class picture day.

Don't worry, I made up for it today by waking up late, causing him to be late, which means eating lunch in the library vs the cafeteria with his friends, AND forgetting his backpack with his homework, which means missing p.e. class, the first class he's able to resume full activity from his knee injury. I'm positive I'm his favorite person in the world today. Ugh!

Wednesday Hodgepodge

My friend Erin always links up and does Joyce's Hodgepodge questions. Since I am at a loss to say anything that isn't sad and depressing, I will give Joyce's questions a shot. Thanks Joyce!

1. Would you rather talk to everyone at a crowded party for a short time or have a significant conversation with two people?

Umm... have a significant conversations with two people, and typically - it's with the same two people I arrived with. I don't know why. Maybe because I'm married to a social butterfly. The evening isn't complete until Keith has talked to EVERYONE and then makes the rounds again to say goodbye to everyone. I'm glad we have children that I can pretend occupy my time while I am doing some serious people watching. Taking it all in.

2. What objects do you remember from your parent's living room?

A large television. There's been several replacements, so brand isn't the issue. My Dad can't function without a television. He might be the very reason I can watch hours on end of tv and know all the TBS movies by heart. The tv and the same coffee table and end tables. The exact same. They don't look half bad either. We would leave cups and hot plates on it and the rings would always fade over time. My sister and I trashed that table and it still looks good. This is the point I make to Keith when he stresses over coasters.

3. Do you hog the bed? Steal the covers? Snore?

No, No, and Not always. Keith is a bed hog. He believes if his torso is on one side of the bed, he's not hogging it. I believe if you bend your body like a boomerang and take up 3/4ths of the bed, you ARE hogging it. I don't think I steal the covers, but I am not afraid to steal them back. This is usually by one violent tug jolting him awake. I'm really a pleasant person. Promise! I have found that when I am pregnant and close to 50 pounds over my typical weight (these days I should refer to it as my dream weight), I snore. I think it's a weight issue with me. I come from a long line of snorers and I'm afraid my day might be coming.

4. Speaking of Easter dinner....what is your favorite way to cook/eat lamb? Or does just the thought of that make you squeamish? If you're not cooking lamb what will be your entree du jour on Easter Sunday?

Is eating lamb an Easter tradition? I didn't know this. And, I've never cooked lamb and don't believe I'll start now. What will we be eating? I haven't planned that far out. I'm luck to plan 2 hours out.

5. Let's throw some politics into this week's mix-oooohhh...Do you know the whereabouts of your birth certificate and when was the last time you had to produce it to prove you're you?

My birth certificate is in our little safe in a top secret location I can not reveal so don't go peeping around my bedroom. The safe is so small it only holds our birth certificates, passports, and titles to our cars (ect....) The last time I used it was to get a passport before we moved to Korea. I have to show the boys all the time... sports, schools....

6. As a child, how did people describe you?

Who knows. I don't think I ever thought about it or cared then... or now. I was pretty thin and lanky. My parents would include smarta%$, strong willed, and expensive.

7. What do you complain about the most?

From my first two answers it would appear my husband. Humm..... I should work on that. Overall, I think I complain about things going wrong or things that have to get taken care of by a deadline. I don't like the pressure of a deadline.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

My cat is sitting by the computer chewing on a rubber band. She's weird. And it doesn't make the noise I would imagine a cat chewing a rubber band would make. Interesting.

My Baby

Last night we had a couple over for dinner. They are getting ready to move to Korea and had a few questions. Super nice people. They also had their 5 weeks old baby with them. The little girl was so precious. I was talking with the mom, asking her questions about how she's eating and sleeping... baby talk. Little did I know Cole was paying attention. He came over and whispered to me "mom, tell her about your baby."

I told him that she knows, but his words have played over and over in my head. I'm not sure of the exact reasons he said that, but I love him. I love him for wanting to share her. I love him for thinking about her. I love him for wanting to include me in the conversation. I love his little heart. Remind me to increase his allowance when he starts getting one.

Only My Brad

This is Brad. Brad went through a phase of wearing an Elf hat (amongst other things) everywhere he went.

Brad is getting very excited for his 5th birthday. He has already decided he wants an Elf party. He wants Jelf the Elf to be there (from the Elf on a Shelf book), and Santa and Mrs. Claus. Parents are to wear our Santa hats and he wants snowflakes on the walls inside, not outside.

Brad told me he wants an Elf cake - not cupcakes, and a hat just like the one he composed yesterday:

His party is in May. I love him and can't wait to honor his every adorable request. I'm imagining a wood working station where he and all his little elf friends build toys for Santa and he takes them to deliver to other kids. Santa is already in the works for a scheduled appearance. Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to make snowflakes a mere seven weeks before the party. Why do I get all crazy and want to make Christmas in May? Last night I kissed him to bed and he said "Mama is so beautiful" And just like that, his wish will be granted.

April Showers bring May...

Houses. At least, that's what we hope. I use the term "we" kinda loosely, but if the stars align we could be home owners... again. That's all I can say about it now because my stomach flips and I feel the need to scratch my neck excessively.

As always, my dear husband is keeping me on my toes. April will be a big turning point for our household in many many ways. You know that I took a class in college that listed the top 10 most stressful times in a persons life. March and April will make sure we cross at least half of those off. I hear that's good for blood pressure and things of that nature. So, if you thought my posts were random now, just wait till I've lost even more sleep and I walk in small circles in about 3 weeks.

The boys are well and ever so funny. Cole suffered his first sports injury. A big goalie fell on his leg and hyper-extended his knee. I wasn't there to witness it because I was running late with a small blonde child who operates on his own time clock. That same night Cole cut his foot open with glass. I wasn't there either. A small blonde boy needed to go to bed ASAP. Cole is suppose to be on Dr's orders of no running, jumping, active playing, P.E., or movement which involves planting his foot and moving his knee. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Honestly! We're doing our best, but the "no soccer for two weeks" rule just about broke his heart.

I felt like a crazy Texas parent explaining to the Dr. how much soccer the kid plays. I'm sure she made a note of that in his file. I'll be sure to watch the next persons facial response as she reads his file the next visit. Also, do you know how difficult it is to find a sports sleeve for a knee that's 10 inches around?

Keith is studying and I have thank you cards to write that I promise I will send out one day! I actually made two trips to the post office in 4 days. Progress.

Delayed Apprecitaion

Do you know what I found as I was cleaning out some things?? Thank you cards. Thank you cards that I have written to other people the past 2 years that I've never mailed out.

I have all kinds of cards - thanks for birthdays, thanks for Christmas gifts... all just sitting here. Envelopes are all addressed but just never mailed. And it's not for the lack of stamps either. There's HUNDREDS here in the drawer.

I also did the same thing with our Christmas cards this year. I ordered, addressed, even bought more stamps, and yet never mailed them out. I don't know why. Maybe now that I'm older it's my new quirky thing. Crazy old lady characteristic #1. Yea me!

Time

We left on a cruise boat. Ran away from the world and reality for a bit. It was a trip planned long before life got crazy. A trip we were cleared to take. It might sound crazy to some. Leave on a tropical vacation a week after your delivered your daughter.... but it was exactly what we needed.

The boys were in good hands and I really had limited contact with them between "that day" and the day we flew out. If I did, I almost don't remember much of it. We sailed away to escape. I couldn't have asked for better travel buddies. I love Steve and Ashley. I didn't have to pretend, or explain why I couldn't get in the water. We didn't have to keep up and fake our way through high adrenalin excursions. We sat, we talked, we prayed, we ate, and ate, and ate, and ate.

I was even ready to get back. Ready to be a mom, wanting to wash their hair, and clean up behind them. I was looking forward to routines, schedules, and life together again. A perfect get away, and a perfect reunion.

The morning after we returned, sweet Cole crawled into bed to snuggle. The only thing he said was "Mom, how big was the baby's heart?" I know he still is thinking about her and processing his questions and feelings. I just hope we are able to help him in honest ways without causing fear or doubt for our love for him.

We've been overwhelmed with people sending their love and prayers. Honestly, it was truly God's love sent to us through each and every one of you. Life can be beautiful, even when it's painful. I'm reading some books and trying to get a grasp on everything that's happened. There's one book, that has the answers and has told me time and time again. His word. I'm totally convinced that God had a plan for Carrie, and God was equally, if not more, heartbroken over her passing. He was crying with me. He was wiping my tears, and He was holding my baby. Without a doubt, I believe she is healed and with our Father. Without a doubt, I believe He will help us through this trial. Without a doubt, I know he will piece my heart back together. I just have to hand it over to Him through faith. Every day. His word says so.

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.." Jeremiah 1:5

"Jesus wept" John 11:40

"See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven." Matthew 18:10

"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." Psalm 147:3

"My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life." Psalm 119:50

I hope you don't think I can slap a bunch of bible verses on my wounds and call it good. That's not how it works. The most amazing thing about God's word is that it keeps you coming back for more. Often times it will raise more questions, and more questions, and sometimes questions that aren't answered this side of Heaven. But what it does tell me, I believe through faith. Believe me, I'm not a biblical scholar. I don't know all of the stories or histories of the great men and women of the bible. I wish I were a better Christian, teacher, and leader. But if you don't have faith or a relationship with God and have questions, please ask. There's no such thing as a dumb question (believe me, I asked them publicly in a bible study and loving women helped me without laughing) and there's never a too-late-to-start age limit.

I usually don't get this "heavy", but I want to share my hope with you. If you don't know Him, He's waiting with open arms.

Our Daughter

It's crazy how life can change in the blink of an eye.

It was suppose to be an ordinary appointment. I didn't even insist Keith go -it was a regular check up, regular visit. No questions, time to schedule the big 20 week sonogram. Actually, I did have some questions. I was still so exhausted. I'm not talking just sleepy, I'm keeping up with two kids, and pregnant kind of tired. I was fatigued. So much so I wanted to fall asleep driving. So much so with naps, nothing helped. I'm talking, couldn't get up to answer the phone 4 feet away lack of energy. I blamed the anemia. I blamed the iron pills. I blamed my body for not absorbing them properly.

The night before I even told Keith something was wrong, obviously thinking with me. I told my sister that if the doctor tells me tomorrow "that's normal, you're pregnant" I was going to cry. Tuesday was a bad day. Wednesday morning I actually felt much better. I was able to eat some cereal before I took my iron pills and still felt good enough to pick up a breakfast burrito from Sonic. Totally out of the ordinary. The iron always made me so sick I couldn't eat. Thinking of food made my stomach turn. I was losing weight. Grocery shopping was torture. My family hadn't eaten a home cooked dinner in a long time. It was all I could do to open a can of soup for them. Partly because food sounded gross, mostly because I didn't have the energy to do it.

I arrived on time and was called back. The tech told me "Dr. Lamar is stuck in a sonogram, do you mind seeing the nurse practitioner?" No, I didn't mind. I said I might have some questions for him later, but I don't mind seeing her right now. Nancy took me back. Weight check. Pee in the cup. Telling her about my fatigue and the awful iron pills. We figured out a new plan. Everything totally normal. She pulled out the doppler to listen to the heartbeat. Almost out of there in record time. I laid back while she slid the wand all over my belly. There were times I thought I heard it ever so faint. There were times she knew the baby was moving around, but we just couldn't get a good read. She said "You know what, let's just go do a sonogram. I don't want you to start getting worried." I wasn't. I mean, we heard her heartbeat at 7 weeks. A miracle in itself. We had Christa's doppler at home. I limited myself to every other day listening to her.... I didn't want to be crazy. We listened on Keith's birthday before bed. It was still high. At one point it read 181. We even googled for reasons on why it would still be this high this far along in the pregnancy. I didn't know why the nurse couldn't find it, but I was secretly looking forward to the sonogram to see her again. I had to wait a while so they could work me into the room, but eventually Nancy took me over to the machine all 6 of the doctors share.

She told me "Now, this is the first time I've ever used this on my own. So don't freak out if we don't see it right away. It's my fault and nothing is wrong. She couldn't get it started an eventually pulled a nurse into the room. The nurse walked her through the set up and soon there was an image on the machine. I even covered my face because I didn't want to know the sex. They assured me they couldn't tell at this angle. We saw the baby and I immediately noticed it wasn't moving all around like she suspected earlier. Nancy took the wand off my belly and said "You know what, let's just go ahead and call Dr. Lamar in here because I just am not comfortable on this. He knows much better what we're looking at." I should have noticed how fast the nurse ran out, and how quickly he came into the room. A clue to prepare my heart, but I still wasn't worried.

He placed the wand on my belly and we saw the exact same image. The baby didn't move which I thought was odd again and then the words came out of his mouth. Words that seemed to stop at my ears because my brain wasn't processing what they really meant. "It appears there is no heartbeat. I am sorry to tell you that your baby has passed away" Immediate tears. He clicked and took some measurements. He showed me the blood flow and where the heart was located. No movement. No blood flow.

He said "You're not going to remember this, but right here at the base of the skull are two large sacs of fluid. They are called ______________ ____________ (he was right, I didn't remember) They are always indicative of Turner's Syndrome. Let me get you cleaned up and we're going to find your husband for you. You have the option to come back with him if you want another sonogram, another opinion, I don't mind and in fact, I hope I'm wrong, but you decide what is best for you if you think you can endure another sonogram."

Nancy the nurse practitioner was in tears with me. The first thing out of my mouth "We tried for four years to get pregnant. That was suppose to be the hard part. We've already heard the heartbeat and I just expected it to always be there"

They took me a back way to the office room and tried to help me find Keith. I couldn't even tell them his phone number. My body was on fight or flight and my brain took a flight. I called his cell. Didn't expect him to answer because he doesn't get reception inside the building. I called his desk. I didn't expect him to answer because I knew he was in a staff meeting. I called the boss's wife. She didn't answer. Three times. I called my neighbor Nicole. Her husband is no longer even working at this base, and to be honest, I wasn't exactly sure they were in the same squadron. I told her I needed to get a hold of Keith and I didn't know how. Did she? Bless her heart, she said "yes, I will call someone. Is it an emergency?" Yes. No other questions, she hung up. Dr. Lamar's staff was trying desperately to get in touch with ANYONE from the base. I was making up numbers hoping a base person could transfer me to information or Keith. Nicole called back and said they are finding him right now. No questions. She let me go. The boss's wife rang back "Hi, I'm Landra and I just received three calls in a row from this number." Before she could finish, I was interrupting her with my need to get ahold of Keith. She said she would call right now.

I decided I was going to leave. The staff wanted me to wait, wanted to let their office girls drive me home. We made a plan to come back at 2:00pm with Keith. I ran to my car and sat there. Keith called and from that point on I don't know what I said. I was screaming the baby and no heartbeat. I was positive he couldn't understand me. He said I'm on my way home. I'm coming home. He didn't even know I wasn't there yet.

From that moment on, life got crazy. A normal appointment did not go according to my plan. We sat with the news for a long time before we could muster the ability to call or tell anyone. How did we get here? How did this happen? Confusion, denial, tears, numbness. What do we do? Someone please tell us what to do next.

We went back and Dr. Lamar spoke with us a long time. He did another sonogram and he was able to tell us what to do next. He said we need to induce you. You can choose to wait, but this is the right thing to do. Those words would mean so much more to me on Friday. "the right thing to do"

I guess because I am the one carrying her, I physically felt how hard she was working by how draining I felt. I physically heard and wondered why her heartbeat was so incredibly high. I physically felt the difference after she passed away. I'm having a much easier time in not only seeing but feeling God's mercy and grace upon her. I am thankful for His total healing on her. He saved her from the pain and strain it was to simply grow inside my womb. I'm not upset about that. I praise Him for loving her like that. I'm sad for us here. I'm sad for the time cut short. I'm sad for lots of things on this side of Heaven. Things He promises to carry me through.

Friday approached and I was extremely upset about taking the medicines at home. I was nervous and couldn't do it. I stalled, I waited, I thought about not doing anything and waiting for Dr. Lamar to start things. Then I realized something. This was the last earthly thing I could offer her as a mother. I could deliver her and be honored to do it. For the first time I was able to sleep. I rested up for the job at hand. There was a sense of peace knowing what had to be done. It was still incredibly hard, but I felt God's presence and love through prayers all day long. It was the right thing to do. Carrie Faye McDaniel was born at 1:02pm on 3-11-11. She was 4 1/2 inches long and weighed 2 oz. We were able to hold her, love her. Say hello and goodbye all at the same time.

I have always love the name Carrie. It was not on our "girl's list" this pregnancy until I remembered a song written by a lady with a similar story. I heard it again on Thursday and the answer was clear to me. Her name would be Carrie, and we will forever praise the One who choose us to be her earthly parents.
